This season, the committee will be publishing important information about local course rules and your Golf Canada handicap in the club newsletter.
Since January 1, 2019, Golf Canada, in conjunction with the USGA and the R&A, has implemented the modernized rule for Lost or Out of Bounds balls.
At Le Maître this rule is in effect for regular play but not for any club competition (i.e. Club Championships, Match Play, Qualification rounds, Men’s night, etc). Obviously, if you or your playing partners are certain that the original shot resulted in the ball finishing out of bounds, you should just re-hit from the original position.
This update introduced an optional Local Rule (Model Local Rule E-5) to improve the pace of play.
Here are the specific details of how this out of bounds rule functions:
The Alternative: It gives golfers the option to drop a ball in the vicinity of where it was lost or went out of bounds (including the nearest fairway edge) rather than going back to replay the shot under "stroke and distance"
The Penalty: Using this relief option costs two penalty strokes.
The Relief Area: You drop the ball in a large, designated area between the point where the ball was lost/went OB and the nearest edge of the fairway that is not closer to the hole.
Exceptions: This local rule cannot be used if the ball went into a penalty area or if you have already played a provisional ball.
