Turf

19 JUL 2024

Another productive week on our two courses. The weekly chores were successfully completed, as were our improvement projects. In last week's work plan, we were able to resume cultural practices; weekly topdressing of greens, removal of weeds from sand traps, aeration with small solid rod, rolling and even removal of morning dew from fairways were accomplished.

Why remove dew from golf fairways? This dew can cause many complications for the turf. With the hot days and cool nights we're experiencing at the moment, dew is very present. The grass can't dry out during the day. With the exception of mowing, the best way to remove dew is to run a rope across the lawn and tie it between two vehicles to bring the dew down to the ground. This week, we opted instead for sliding a hose filled with water over the lawn.

With this humidity, diseases can often appear. Dollar spot is one of them. A temperature of 20-25 C and humidity of 10-12 hours a day, for a few days, are conducive to development.

This foliage disease must be treated to prevent infected plants from withering away. When patchy blight appears, small white spots the size of a silver dollar can be seen on greens and alleys.

Maintenance to come:

  • Improve drainage in problem areas
  • Fungal treatment of fairways
  •  Dethatching tee
